An ovum (plural ova) is a medical term for an unfertilized egg produced by the ovaries. When fertilized by sperm, it is called a zygote. Both unfertilized ova and sperm cells are gametes, which are haploid cells. A human ovum is so small, it can hardly be seen by the naked eye.

Ova are released every so often from ovaries in a process called ovulation. Upon ovulating, the ova can travel from its ovary through a Fallopian tube into the uterus of a female, becoming available for fertilization by sperm. Ova (or zygotes) which do not become attached to the internal genitalia are lost in menses through menstruation.
