Gay A person whose sexual orientation appeals to members of the same sex. Male homosexuals are usually referred to as gay, and females as lesbian. It is now used widely as an antonym for 'Straight' although it is widely accepted that human sexuality is not a black/white issue, but rather covers a spectrum with many shades of grey in between the two easily identifiable labels of Straight at one end and Gay at the other.
Homosexuality refers to sexuality, whilst gay is a more all encompasing term.
History
In ancient Greece, it was not unusual for men to have male lovers. Wives were seen as a tool for procreation and a means of forming alliances with other families. Men commonly had sex with other men for pleasure, and no distinction was drawn between heterosexual and homosexual men.
Before contact with Christianity, homosexual relationships were not uncommon in many Asian countries. In Japan, for example, homosexual love was thought to be purer than heterosexual love. [Source: Women of the Pleasure Quarters, Lesley Downer]
Gay can also refer to a group's culture. LGBT History Months exist in various countries around the world and there is a Gay and Lesbian Film Festival held in London every year.
At one time considered to be a mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association it was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 1973 and is now considered to be a natural human variation.
Gay people often but not always enjoy anal sex.
